Jalpaiguri → Mangan → Gurudongmar → Yumthang → Gangtok → home

The plan: roll out of Jalpaiguri before dawn, top up the tank and permits at Mangan (the last fuel), and climb the Teesta valley to a first night at Lachen. A pre-dawn dash takes you to Gurudongmar Lake at 5,430 m before the army cutoff, with Kala Patthar on the way back down; then cross to Lachung, drop bags and ride up to Katao the same afternoon. Give a day to Yumthang and the snow at Zero Point, then descend to a Gangtok night before the daylight run home. All times and distances are planning estimates — mountain weather, landslides and army cutoffs write the real itinerary.

What to wear, day by day
  • Base layer always: merino/thermal top + bottoms once past Mangan
  • Day 1 (plains → Lachen 2,750 m): riding jacket + light thermals; it cools fast by evening
  • Day 2 (Gurudongmar 5,430 m, pre-dawn): every layer you have — thermals, fleece, windproof shell, balaclava, thick gloves, waterproof socks; it is sub-zero at dawn
  • Day 2 pm (Katao, if open): heavy layers again — snow and wind
  • Day 3 (Yumthang · Zero Point 4,724 m): thermals + windproof, waterproof gloves for the snow
  • Day 4–5 (descent to Gangtok → plains): shed layers as you drop; keep a rain shell handy
  • Always on the bike: full-face helmet, armoured jacket + gloves, sturdy boots, knee guards
How to pack (for a bike)
  • Soft luggage (saddlebags + tail bag) over hard cases — kinder on rough roads and drops
  • Line everything with dry-bags or bin liners; rain and river-crossing spray are guaranteed
  • Keep it light and low: heavy items near the seat, balanced left/right
  • Bungee net + extra straps; a tank bag for phone, permits, cash and snacks
  • Nothing loose on the back seat — vibration and hairpins shake things off

  • Tubeless puncture-repair kit + a 12V inflator (or hand pump); a spare tube if you run tubes
